The Function of Flocculent Lignin Fiber in Highway Construction

Flocculent lignin fibers are one kind of lignin fibers. They are flocculent or nearly powdery in appearance and white or gray in color. Flocculent lignin fibers are engineering fibers of high quality and purity made of pure flocculent fibers through physical action and unique technology. Lignin fibers act in asphalt concrete, forming a layer of asphalt film firmly on the surface of asphalt aggregates, and thickening the film because of the role of lignin fibers. Thus the anti-aging ability of asphalt layer is improved and its service life is prolonged.

Flocculent lignin fibers are also commonly referred to as road fibers. The following five functions of flocculent lignin fiber make it our preferred material in road pavement!

Reinforcement - Fibers form three-dimensional reticulated bars in asphalt mixtures. At low temperature, it has a certain degree of cracking resistance.

Stabilization - Fibers stabilize the asphalt film. At high temperature, the inner space of the fibers absorbs part of the heat-expanded asphalt and does not become free asphalt, thus preventing oil flooding and improving high temperature stability.

Adsorption - Fiber can increase the adhesion between asphalt and mineral powder, greatly improve the viscosity of asphalt horseshoe grease, strengthen the cohesion between aggregates, and play a role in enhancing the asphalt mixture.

Dispersion - Fiber stabilizer has good dispersibility, it can make asphalt, mineral powder and other components evenly dispersed in the mixture. To prevent the formation of micellar substances resulting in pavement oil spots.

Thickening effect - Fiber stabilizer can absorb more asphalt in asphalt mixture by adsorbing asphalt on fiber surface. It makes the aggregate surface form a thicker asphalt structure film and improves the durability of the mixture. In the process of production, transportation and paving, asphalt will flow to the bottom of the mixture due to its own gravity. After adding fiber stabilizer in the mixing process, the fiber can firmly hold the asphalt with its unique three-dimensional network structure to prevent the drip and segregation of asphalt. Moreover, the fiber has a strong stiffening property, which can greatly enhance the asphalt mortar. Thus, the high and low temperature stability of asphalt mixture is greatly improved.
